Oculus Rift: A Look Ahead

Oculus Rift: A Look Ahead

2016 is going to be a momentous year for games and you can read more about what we are excited about soon. But Let’s focus on a unique development in the gaming world slated to launch (sometime) this year: Virtual Reality Headsets! Today specifically we are talking about the Oculus Rift.

Flashback to 1994! I was just a kid with (presumably) eyes glued to a Game Boy or SNES system and something would have to be pretty electric to pull my gaze from my sacred screens.

Blank Check is a Disney Movie about a 12 year old boy (turd, really) named Preston that gets a blank check (riveting, I know) from a criminal though a stroke of luck. After firing up his hot shiny Macintosh computer, prints a check for a million buckaroos.

You will have to view it yourself to get much more, but just know that it is a real treat! Perhaps worthy of a Screening Room viewing...

It should be noted that the ridiculous excess demonstrated in this movie fueled the most avaricious materialistic dreams that my young mind could concoct. I was entitled to a water slide, a matrix of up to a dozen 90’s cathode ray tube TVs to play my cartridges and finally enter the pictured above VR prototype.

I thought to myself, it’s in the movies. Surely this type of thing will be available in the near future……

Not until, 2016! This is the year that reptilian nerds can enjoy head mounted, motion controlled, digital offerings from the comfort of their caves. Is this the greatest thing ever to happen to digital entertainment or the beginning of the end, where humanity doesn’t need to leave the house ever to experience a fresh, vivid reality? Probably not immediately with a price tag of $599..

Regardless of the verdict, let’s explore some of the titles that are going to make the flagship VR device a great product out of the gate!

EVE: Valkyrie

Did you ever want to be immersed in space combat, with flying debris, asteroids and enemy gunfire blazing past you? Well here it is! EVE: Valkyrie throws you in the cockpit of a space fighter and ask you and your allies buckled up for some intense space combat.  Also, Valkyrie will launch with the Oculus Rift.

Bullet Train

Epic Games, makers of the Unreal Tournament Series, Gears of War and, of course, the influential Unreal Engine, have premiered this gorgeous looking game with few details. What intrigues me is how it will use the hand controls to affect the gun play. Again, not much info except for this cool trailer. Can’t wait for more!

Stranded on an empty space station on Jupiter’s moon, Titan, you’ve got to find out what happened in this curious and oddly serene exploration and discovery game. It broke Steam Greenlight records and I know many can’t wait to play this gorgeous title.

I just hope it's not real enough to affect my allergies... (I'll show myself out..)

The Climb

Crytek releases beautiful titles. Cryengine is sophisticated and beautiful. The Climb is no exception.

This one get me excited because just watching the video gave me a little vertigo and I'm flipped out by heights. Maybe this will help me conquer my fears. Or maybe it will help me understand that both feet were meant to be firmly planted...

And here’s the bad(ish) news, if you are in the same boat as me, you will need to upgrade some hardware to be Rift ready. Here are the system requirements.

Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 equivalent or greater
CPU: Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
Memory: 8GB+ RAM
Video Output: Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
USB Ports: 3x USB 3.0 ports plus 1x USB 2.0 port
OS: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer

That’s just a taste of all the goodness that will hit the eyeballs of the preorders in March 2016. Stay tuned for more as we get closer!
